Non-geographic numbers are those that start with 03, 05, 070/076, 080, 0845, 0870, 083/4, 0871, 09, 116 and 118.

Previously used for services that were unavailable on standard landline numbers, they are now used to call for information, voting on television shows, making payments and to call businesses.

They are a popular choice for businesses in the UK because they are virtual telephone numbers that can be used anywhere in the world; they are not assigned according to your location, so no matter where you are based, you can use a non-geographic number.

Other benefits you can gain from using a non-geographic telephone number for your company are:

Flexibility – Depending on where the caller is based, or what time of day they make the call, phone calls can be redirected to any suitable call centre. This removes the limitations of a specific geographic area and the need to change telephone numbers to suit the location.

Disaster Recovery – Non-geographic numbers can easily redirect phone calls when necessary, for example if there is a fault with the telephone network; standard landlines would become instantly unavailable.

Charges – With the wide variety of non-geographic numbers come a variety of different charges, for example freephone numbers will cost the caller nothing!

The different numbers you can choose from are as follows:

03 – This number is not linked to an area code and can be used anywhere in the UK. There is a lowered local rate to call, and can even be free of charge depending on minute bundles.

0845 – This can also be used anywhere in the UK but they normally incur costs for every minute of the call.

0800 / 0808 – These are freephone numbers which incur no cost for the caller.
