The ISDN Switch-Off

At the end of 2017, BT announced its intention to close the Public Switched Telephone Network.

The affected products includes the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). The majority of UK businesses use ISDN for their communications!

Out With the Old, In With the New

Delivering voice and data services simultaneously on digital lines, ISDN is now considered as an old-fashioned method of communication. So, ISDN is being removed, and replaced with the latest IP technologies.

Fibre lines, high-speed broadband and other newer, faster technologies enable businesses to migrate to an IP network. They will have to embrace current IP Telephony and cloud-based solutions. In 2023, ISDN will no longer be sold to businesses customers. Any business wanting to expand using their traditional telephone systems will have to move to new, alternative products.

Switch Off ISDN, Switch On VoIP

There are over 16 million lines and channels that utilise PSTN at the moment, so the transition will be a massive undertaking. It is understandable why it may seem daunting switching to a new system, however, the feature benefits and cost savings make perfect sense.
